On Friday, I accepted a position in Nashville to head up the ColdFusion GUI Architecture team for a good company there. Since Michelle and Sabrina are still in Guatemala, it’s going to be hectic getting the house fixed up, things moved to storage, finding a place to live in Nashville and then getting the essentials moved down there.
If anyone who currently works in Nashville gets around to reading this, I would love to hear what kind of support groups exist for technical folk – whether it be general, Adobe-specific, or ColdFusion-specific.
We’re looking at leasing a place for a year around the Bellevue area, since we’ve heard good things about it. However, a good friend of mine who moved South a few years ago recently told me that I’ll have to get used to sweet tea, grits(!), and fatback (sounds foul). Also, the thought of my daughter growing up with a small southern accent is strange, but at least I’m glad she won’t be exposed to Pittsburghese except in small bursts.

Now come on, fatback?! Seriously, don’t be so stereotypical. Sweet tea is common, but not a requirement. I haven’t eaten grits in years, but they’re here if you want them.
As for support, I am new to Nashville myself (moved from Georgia), so I can’t speak to that. However, your myopic view of the South is going to be pleasantly surprised, I think.
BTW, living in Nashville is only partially being in the South. It’s not as changed as Atlanta, but a lot of people in Nashville aren’t “from round dese parts” so you won’t get as much of the Southern accent as you might in some place like Birmingham, AL.
Hey Steve,
There is NCFUG – The Nashville CF User Group.
In fact on May 9th we will be hosting an NCFUG event here at work: Ben Forta’s World-Wide Scorpio Tour.
Check out this NCFUG link:

Sweet tea and cheese grits are the two things I dream about at night while temporarily transplanted in the NorthEast.
You will do fine. And remember when you get there, YOU are the one with the accent.
Best of luck to you!

Oh one more thing…
I moved down here (Franklin Tn) three years ago from Long Island, NY and I love it!

I moved to Nashville from Detroit 2 years ago. Sweet Tea is common, but grits are easily avoided and for the most part you can also avoid country music if you choose.
My wife and I have loved it down here! It’s nice adding the seasons of spring and fall to the Michigan seasons of winter and construction. There’s also a lot more sun down here.
Nashville also has a ton of people CFMX 7 certified, many of which are connected to NCFUG.
Welcome!
Hey, congratulations on the gig. I’ll be reading you regularly to see how it goes. Good luck with the move.
I’d really like to move to Nashville too (getting out of the cold north). I would be interested in hearing anyone’s advice on the best job sites to use for searching–dice and monster seem to be pretty much dead for nashville–are there any local ones that are happening? Thanks in advance, hope to join you down there soon!
Anyone interested in the Nashville area should check out our Senior Java/Coldfusion Developer job listing as well as the video here:

There are plenty of transplants here in Nashville. We’re from Colorado.
Welcome to Nashville. Sweet tea… what is that. And I’ve never even seen grits let alone heard of fatback. What is that? Pig?
Thanks for the info, guys.
Mark, I dug you on this CD:
uh, that was funnier when the IMG SRC tag worked. Please delete :D
